Rossi recovered from an indifferent start as he passed Pedrosa to claim the lead with Stoner in third while Barros - in his 264th race and on a second string Ducati - was riding a stormer of a race and moved up to fifth. The lead changed numerous times in the opening eight laps as Loris Capirossi, Stoner and Pedrosa swapped the honors, though Capirossi dropped down the field to seventh on the eighth lap. Rossi equaled the achievement of Australian Mick Doohan, who won the Italian Grand Prix six years running between 19 in the old 500cc class. "It was an unbelievable race," said the charismatic Italian. Rossi's win cuts Stoner's overall lead to just nine points with Honda's Pedrosa in third place but 33 points adrift. Veteran Alex Barros of Brazil was third to deny championship leader Casey Stoner of Australia a podium finish.
